Staying Warm

Writer's picture: Dana RamboDana Rambo

This week's assignment was to tell a story in one image. It couldn't be just any story. You had to show warmth. It felt like a cruel joke given it was actually below 0 F here only yesterday.

The question I asked myself was, what is warmth? Do you go literally and photograph something that is warm? Blankets, fire, the boiling hot surface of the sun? All things that I've been coveting this week. Or do you go with the feeling? What connotations come when you think of the word?

Do you think of a feeling? Love or devotion?

A girl reaching to pet a horse in the snow
There's not much this girl loves more than a horse

Do you think of a place or a moment?

An adult and two kids sledding down a snowy hill
I was freezing but they didn't want to come in.

Maybe you look at something and it simply looks warm?

A cake covered in candied lemons
Food is 100% my warmth

Warmth is so many different things to so many different people but yet we can all recognize it when we see it. This is why it's a great place to start a story.
